Psychology For You means that I tailor my approach to meet your needs.
A humanistic approach is at the core of all my therapeutic work, and my pluralistic philosophy. This means that you can expect to receive a non-judgemental, accepting, empathetic, and authenticity. Research continually demonstrates that these qualities within the therapeutic relationship is essential for effective therapeutic outcomes.
Within certain cultures, psychological distress is often pathologised. My belief is that psychological distress is better understood as a person’s natural, adaptive survival strategy, in response to difficult personal, inter-relational and, or environmental triggers. I will help you to understand how your difficulties developed through your life span. Together, we will identify aspects in your psychology that are keeping you stuck in unhelpful patterns that maintain your distress. I will support you to process difficult emotions, develop an understanding of your distress, and teach you techniques and skills to modify your responses. This will support you to have a better relationship not only with others, but yourself.
Prior to intervention, I will spend time assessing your psychological well-being based on your subjective experiences, and use empirical research to understand your difficulties within the current psychological evidence-base. During this assessment phase, we discuss your therapeutic goals, needs and preferences. We then enter a 'formulation' stage, where we develop a joint understanding of how your difficulties developed, and what is likely to play a role in keeping you 'stuck'. Based on this, we collaboratively develop a therapeutic treatment plan that works towards your goals.
Therapy requires active participation to integrate change into your life.
