What is a counselling psychologist?
'Counselling Psychologist' is a legally protected title. It gained by the completion of a Doctoral degree, and training accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Counselling Psychologists are required to demonstrate competency and alignment with the standards of the HCPC. This includes for example practicing safely and effectively; working within legal and ethical frameworks; practicing in a non-discriminatory manor and we must demonstrate continued professional development. A unique discipline within the field of psychology, Counselling Psychology is founded in a Humanistic tradition. This is the belief that all humans are autonomous; intrinsically drawn towards growth, and given the right 'conditions', have the capacity to reach their full potential and become the person that they want to be. The 'conditions' being the exploration of psychological difficulties within a trusting, empathetic, non-judgemental and authentic environment. Not only are Counselling Psychologists skilled developing this therapeutic environment and relationship, but we are scientific practitioners. This means that we draw on objective, evidence-based research, knowledge and psychological models, to skilfully evaluate, and develop effective and efficient treatment plans to fit with the unique experiences of the individual.
How long is a session?
Sessions are by appointment only and are 50 minutes in duration.
What can I expect in my first few sessions?
The first sessions are an ‘assessment phase’, where I gather information to learn about you, and what brought you to seek support at this time in your life. We explore what feels important to you and I ask questions to understand how your difficulties may have developed and maintained. We talk about what you hope to achieve from therapy, and what you think you need to help you achieve your goals. In this phase we begin to develop our therapeutic relationship and I invite you to ask any questions you have about the therapeutic process.
How often do I need to attend sessions?
Psychotherapy is most effective with weekly sessions especially in the early stages of therapy. Depending on needs however, sessions can be spaced out at two weeks apart.
How effective is psychotherapy?
Research consistently demonstrates psychotherapy is effective method for the treatment of many psychological difficulties.
Psychotherapeutic change requires active participation, and commitment to restructure and adapt to new ways of thinking and being. Research additionally continues to show that the more active and collaborative psychotherapy is, the better the outcomes.
How many sessions will I need?
How many sessions required is assessed on an individual basis and dependant on your needs.
How much do sessions cost, and how do I pay?
Each 50 minute session is £95. Payments can be made via PayPal or bank transfer before sessions, or cash can be taken at the time of your appointment.
Can I use my health insurance?
Please check with your provider to see if psychological therapy sessions are covered; how many sessions you can have, and if there are any other requirements. The majority of private insurers require that you pay first and then apply to them for a reimbursement.
